Turmeric concluded the trading session at Rs 20,864, reflecting a decline of 1.06%. This downturn was influenced by enhanced monsoon conditions in Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, which alleviated fears regarding potential crop damage and bolstered anticipations of increased production. The filling of key reservoirs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has ensured reliable water availability during the vegetative phase, thereby reducing speculation regarding crop failures. Recent precipitation in key agricultural areas over the last five to six days is anticipated to expedite sowing activities, while the re-sowing process in North Karnataka has been finalised due to enhanced rainfall conditions. Turmeric acreage is projected to increase by 16.05% year-on-year starting in 2025, remaining above the five-year average of 1.88 lakh hectares.

However, the ultimate sowing pace will be contingent upon the distribution of rainfall and the potential impacts of El Nino. Despite improved weather conditions, the persistently tight supply situation continues to provide support, with carry-forward stocks estimated at approximately 15 lakh bags, a decrease from over 20 lakh bags in the previous season. Farmers selling during the peak harvest period have enhanced near-term availability, whereas stockists continue to exercise caution. The regulations regarding Maximum Residue Limits in the European Union have resulted in the rejection of lots that do not comply with Integrated Pest Management standards, thereby affecting the commercial-grade turmeric market.

In contrast, there is a robust demand for turmeric that meets Integrated Pest Management certification, which is bolstering the market for compliant stocks. Export demand remains largely consistent, as evidenced by India’s May turmeric exports, which saw a year-on-year decline of 1%, falling to 18,960 tonnes from 19,205 tonnes. Meanwhile, the exports for April-May remained nearly stable at 33,999 tonnes. Demand from Oman, China, Yemen, and Italy exhibited robust growth, with exports to China experiencing a remarkable surge of 4,631% to reach 2,021 tonnes during April-May. Shipments to Oman also saw a significant increase of 310%, totalling 1,019 tonnes, while exports to Yemen rose by 48%, amounting to 393 tonnes.

In Nizamabad, spot turmeric concluded at Rs 20,355.4, reflecting a decrease of 0.21%. From a technical perspective, the market is experiencing long liquidation, evidenced by a 0.39% decrease in open interest to 17,705 contracts, alongside a price decline of Rs 224. Turmeric exhibits support levels at Rs 20,624 and subsequently at Rs 20,382, with resistance identified at Rs 21,154. A sustained move above Rs 21,154 could extend gains toward Rs 21,442, while failure to hold Rs 20,624 may trigger further correction.
