Turmeric experienced a significant increase of 6%, closing at Rs 24,346. This rise can be attributed to heightened demand, limited availability in the spot market, and a decrease in selling activity by stockists, who are now holding back supplies due to apprehensions regarding future availability. Prices also increased due to concerns over El Niño-related dry spells and potential yield losses, even as monsoon conditions improved across various growing regions. Karnataka’s drought assessment indicated that turmeric crop losses spanned 13,446 hectares, with a valuation of Rs 18,824 lakh, in contrast to an estimated cultivation area of 18,000–20,000 hectares within the state.
India’s turmeric production is anticipated to rise by around 15% in 2026, bolstered by an estimated 20% increase in acreage, especially in Maharashtra. Carryforward stocks have decreased to approximately 15 lakh bags, down from over 20 lakh bags in the previous season. This reduction has tightened overall availability and heightened market sensitivity to weather developments. Enhanced precipitation in Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, coupled with the replenishment of reservoirs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, has alleviated short-term worries regarding crop failures. Additionally, the successful re-sowing efforts in North Karnataka have bolstered agricultural outlooks.
Nevertheless, persistent dry conditions during the early stages of crop development could negatively impact yields. The maximum residue limit requirements set by the European Union are impacting trade dynamics, as the demand for Integrated Pest Management certified turmeric bolsters compliant stocks, while non-compliant commercial grades are subjected to discounts. India’s turmeric exports experienced a decline of 10% year-on-year, totalling 13,489 tonnes in July 2026, down from 15,071 tonnes in the same month the previous year.
During the period from April to July, cumulative exports experienced a 4% increase, reaching 65,476 tonnes, bolstered by robust demand from Turkey, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and Switzerland. In Nizamabad, a significant spot market, prices increased by 5.36% to Rs 22,524.85. Turmeric is currently experiencing new buying activity, as evidenced by an 11.16% rise in open interest to 14,495 contracts, alongside a price increase of Rs 1,378. Immediate support is positioned at Rs 23,874, with subsequent support at Rs 23,404, while resistance is identified at Rs 24,580. A sustained move above this level could push prices toward Rs 24,816, whereas a break below support may trigger profit booking.
