Turmeric concluded the trading session with an increase of 0.28%, reaching Rs 20,558. This uptick comes in the context of apprehensions regarding inadequate rainfall, the possible effects of El Nino, and a slower-than-anticipated expansion in sowing across crucial agricultural areas, which collectively heighten concerns about diminished production in the forthcoming harvest. Declining carry-forward stocks have further tightened the supply outlook, with industry estimates placing inventories at approximately 15 lakh bags compared to over 20 lakh bags in the previous season.
Prolonged dry conditions in the early stages of crop development may adversely impact yields, while farmer selling during the peak harvest period has introduced some immediate pressure. However, the revival of monsoon activity across Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka has alleviated crop stress, while enhanced reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are bolstering water availability during the vegetative phase. Re-sowing in North Karnataka has been finalised subsequent to rainfall, enhancing crop conditions and alleviating immediate concerns regarding crop failure. The regulations regarding Maximum Residue Limits in the European Union persist in impacting commercial-grade turmeric.
Lots that do not comply with Integrated Pest Management standards are experiencing rejections and discounts, whereas the increasing demand for IPM-certified turmeric is bolstering compliant stocks.
