NCDEX Updates

Turmeric concluded with an increase of 0.81% at Rs 20,750, bolstered by a tight supply scenario, diminished carry-forward inventories, and apprehensions that arid conditions and El Nino may impact the recently planted crop. Lower-than-expected sowing expansion in key growing regions has raised concerns over upcoming production, while continued dryness during early crop development could adversely affect yields and provide further price support. Nonetheless, the recent resurgence of monsoon activity in Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka has alleviated immediate crop stress. Additionally, enhanced reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have bolstered water availability during the vegetative phase.

Re-sowing in North Karnataka has been finalised in the wake of recent rainfall, leading to an enhancement in crop conditions. These developments have alleviated concerns regarding crop failures and fostered a more subdued sentiment as traders evaluate the potential for improved weather to lead to increased production. Carry-forward stocks are estimated at approximately 15 lakh bags, in contrast to over 20 lakh bags from the previous season, suggesting a more constrained availability buffer. EU regulations on Maximum Residue Limits have led to the rejection of lots that do not comply with Integrated Pest Management  standards, while the increasing demand for IPM-certified turmeric is bolstering compliant stocks.

The act of farmers selling during the peak harvest window introduces an additional pressure factor. India’s turmeric exports experienced a year-on-year decline of 10%, totalling 13,489 tonnes in July 2026, down from 15,071 tonnes. However, cumulative exports for the period from April to July showed a 4% increase, rising to 65,476 tonnes from 63,020 tonnes. Exports to Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Nigeria experienced remarkable growth rates of 431%, 644%, and 983%, respectively, while shipments to Switzerland and Zambia also saw significant increases. In Nizamabad, spot turmeric concluded at Rs 20,222.7, reflecting a decline of 0.25%.

Technically, the market is experiencing short covering, as evidenced by a 0.18% decline in open interest to 36,855 contracts, while prices have increased by Rs 166, suggesting a constrained unwinding of bearish positions. Turmeric is currently receiving support around Rs 20,484, and a decline beneath this threshold may reveal Rs 20,218. On the upside, resistance is positioned around Rs 20,908, and a sustained movement beyond this threshold may result in a rise to Rs 21,066.
