Jeera prices concluded the session with a marginal increase of 0.07%, reaching Rs 21,300. This uptick was bolstered by short covering, as the constriction of premium-quality seed supplies countered the ongoing selling pressure from farmers. Producers have been actively liquidating stocks to generate cash for Kharif sowing, while favourable weather across north-west India has accelerated harvesting and deliveries, resulting in increased market arrivals. Despite the ongoing accumulation of NCDEX warehouse stocks, which has lessened the immediate need for spot procurement, there has been a notable constriction in the availability of export-grade bold seeds.
Daily arrivals in major trading centres like Unjha and Rajasthan have begun to decrease, which is contributing to price support. In the Unjha spot market, jeera prices concluded at Rs 20,895.9, reflecting a decline of 0.29%. Fundamentally, the market continues to experience varied demand conditions. Domestic spice processors are exercising caution and are restricting their purchases to immediate needs instead of expanding their inventories. Export demand has been influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a slower-than-anticipated purchasing pace from China.
However, demand from Europe and North America has shown improvement, particularly for residue-compliant and premium-quality lots. Crop quality has been adversely affected by blight disease in certain regions of Gujarat, leading to a decrease in the availability of superior-grade seeds. Production estimates for the current season indicate a decline compared to last year, with total output projected at 90–92 lakh bags, a decrease from the previous figure of 1.10 crore bags. India’s jeera exports experienced a decline of 26% year-on-year, totalling 17,177 tonnes in May.
Cumulatively, exports during April-May decreased by 22%, even as shipments to emerging markets like Singapore, Mexico, Yemen, and Poland showed stronger performance. From a technical perspective, the market experienced short covering, as open interest decreased by 2.17% while prices moved upward. Immediate support is positioned at Rs 21,130, succeeded by Rs 20,940. Resistance is observed at Rs 21,440, and a sustained movement above this threshold may lead to further gains towards Rs 21,560.
