Turmeric prices concluded at Rs 21,492, reflecting a decline of 1.19%. This decrease can be attributed to enhanced monsoon rainfall in key producing areas, which alleviated short-term worries regarding the forthcoming crop and fostered optimism for increased production in the ongoing Kharif season. Favourable rainfall in the preceding week is anticipated to expedite sowing operations, while appealing prices hovering around multi-year peaks are expected to motivate farmers to expand their cultivated area. However, the pace of sowing will continue to hinge on the distribution of rainfall and the potential impact of El Niño on crop development.
Despite the recent decline, the downside remained constrained owing to reduced market arrivals, tight spot supplies, and consistent export demand. Total arrivals were estimated at approximately 8,500 bags, a significant decline from the 18,000 bags recorded in the prior session, primarily attributed to the closure of key markets in Maharashtra. Overall supplies remain structurally constrained as diminished production and decreased carry-forward stocks persist in bolstering the market. Industry estimates indicate that carry-forward inventories are approximately 15 lakh bags, a notable decrease from the over 20 lakh bags observed in the previous season.
Simultaneously, heightened farmer selling during the harvest period and quality concerns, including rhizome rot, have exerted downward pressure on short-term prices. Export demand exhibited resilience, notwithstanding a slight decrease. India’s turmeric exports decreased by 1% year-on-year to 18,960 tonnes in May 2026, whereas cumulative exports for April-May held steady at 33,999 tonnes. Robust demand from China, Oman, Yemen, and Italy effectively counterbalanced the decline in shipments to other markets, especially concerning IPM-certified turmeric.
Technically, the market experienced new selling pressure, as open interest rose by 2.95% to 29,985 contracts while prices fell. Immediate support is identified at Rs 21,190, with subsequent support at Rs 20,886, while resistance is established at Rs 21,738. A sustained move above this level could extend gains towards Rs 21,982, while the near-term bias remains cautiously neutral.
