Turmeric prices experienced a notable decline of 5%, settling at Rs 21,546, as profit booking took place following the recent rally. Market sentiment deteriorated as monsoon activity resumed in Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, alleviating worries regarding dry conditions and enhancing crop outlooks. Adequate rainfall has replenished key reservoirs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, ensuring sufficient water availability during the crop’s vegetative stage and alleviating concerns regarding potential production losses. Re-sowing has been finalised in North Karnataka following enhanced rainfall, thereby bolstering anticipations of improved crop development. Earlier gains were propelled by a reduction in carry-forward stocks, inadequate rainfall, and apprehensions that El Niño might adversely affect the upcoming crop.

Fundamental factors persist in offering a varied perspective. Turmeric acreage is projected to rise approximately 16.05% year-on-year, significantly surpassing the five-year average, driven by appealing market prices. Recent rainfall across major producing regions is anticipated to expedite sowing activity; however, market participants continue to exercise caution regarding the future distribution of monsoon rains and the potential implications of El Niño. Carry-forward stocks are projected to be approximately 15 lakh bags, which is considerably lower than the previous season’s figure of more than 20 lakh bags, resulting in a relatively constrained overall supply.

Export demand exhibited a generally stable trend in the early months of the financial year, notwithstanding a slight decrease in shipments observed in May. Robust export expansion to markets including China, Oman, Yemen, and Italy mitigated the decline observed in other regions. Premium demand for Integrated Pest Management certified turmeric from European buyers continues to support prices for quality produce; however, stricter residue regulations have exerted pressure on commercial-grade supplies.

Technically, turmeric is experiencing long liquidation, as evidenced by a 1.17% decline in open interest, which suggests the liquidation of existing long positions. Immediate support is established at Rs 20,974, with subsequent support at Rs 20,402, while resistance is identified at Rs 22,464. A sustained recovery above this level could enhance market sentiment and pave the way toward the Rs 23,382 level.
