Turmeric prices concluded at Rs 22,552, reflecting a 0.71% increase, bolstered by constrained spot availability, diminished carry-forward stocks, and apprehensions that irregular monsoon rainfall may impact the current crop. Market sentiment exhibited resilience as traders persisted in evaluating the prospective effects of El Niño on planting and agricultural growth. Recent rainfall has enhanced soil moisture levels in key turmeric-producing areas; however, stakeholders are exercising caution, recognising that continued precipitation is essential for optimal crop development. The decline in carry-forward stocks accumulated over the past few years has also tightened overall market availability, providing additional support to prices despite seasonal arrivals.
Fundamental factors exhibited a mixed performance. Industry estimates indicate that carry-forward stocks have decreased to approximately 15 lakh bags, down from over 20 lakh bags in the previous season, highlighting a contraction in supplies. Simultaneously, turmeric acreage is projected to rise by 16.05% year-on-year, significantly exceeding the five-year average of 1.88 lakh hectares, as high prices incentivise farmers to broaden cultivation during the ongoing Kharif season. Good rainfall over the past week is anticipated to expedite sowing activity; however, the speed of this process will remain contingent upon the distribution of monsoon rainfall.
Selling pressure from farmers liquidating stocks during the harvest season constrained gains, while demand for Integrated Pest Management certified turmeric from European buyers continued to bolster support for premium-quality supplies. India’s turmeric exports experienced a slight decline of 1% year-on-year, totalling 18,960 tonnes in May. However, cumulative exports for the period of April-May remained relatively stable at 33,999 tonnes, bolstered by robust demand from China, Oman, Yemen, and Italy.
From a technical perspective, turmeric experienced short covering, as open interest decreased by 0.51% while prices increased. Immediate support is positioned at Rs 22,364, succeeded by Rs 22,178, whereas resistance is observed at Rs 22,758. A sustained move above this level could extend gains towards Rs 22,966, suggesting that the near-term technical bias remains cautiously positive despite weather-related uncertainties.
