Turmeric prices experienced a decline of 2.55%, settling at Rs 20,356. This decrease can be attributed to improved monsoon rainfall, which has alleviated immediate concerns regarding crop prospects and fostered expectations of enhanced production during the current Kharif season. Favourable rainfall across major turmeric-growing regions over the past week is anticipated to expedite sowing activities, while appealing prices near multi-year highs are expected to incentivise farmers to increase acreage. Traders continue to concentrate on the distribution of rainfall in the upcoming weeks, given that any irregular precipitation or the possible effects of El Niño could significantly affect crop development and production.

Despite the recent correction, the downside appears constrained by tight physical supplies and reduced market arrivals. Total arrivals were estimated at approximately 8,500 bags, a significant decline from 18,000 bags in the prior session, attributed to the closure of key markets in Maharashtra. Carry-forward stocks are estimated at approximately 15 lakh bags, which is considerably lower than last season’s 20 lakh bags, resulting in a relatively tight overall availability. However, heightened selling activity by farmers during the peak harvest season, coupled with reports of quality concerns such as rhizome rot, has exerted short-term pressure on prices.

Export demand persists in offering fundamental support. India’s turmeric exports experienced a slight decline of 1% year-on-year, totalling 18,960 tonnes in May. Meanwhile, cumulative exports for April and May held steady at 33,999 tonnes. Robust expansion in exports to China, Oman, Yemen, and Italy counterbalanced declines in shipments to other markets, indicating a solid international appetite, especially for Integrated Pest Management certified turmeric.

From a technical perspective, turmeric is currently experiencing long liquidation, as evidenced by a 1.38% decline in open interest in conjunction with decreasing prices. Immediate support is positioned at Rs 20,080, succeeded by Rs 19,802, whereas resistance is identified at Rs 20,618 and Rs 20,878. A sustained break below support could extend the correction, whereas a move above resistance may revive fresh buying interest and improve short-term market sentiment.
