Turmeric prices experienced a decrease of 0.39%, concluding at Rs 15,932, largely influenced by heightened arrivals in major mandis including Nizamabad, Erode, and Hingoli. The expedited selling by farmers to address liquidity requirements for the forthcoming Kharif sowing has resulted in a short-term oversupply, thereby exerting additional downward pressure on prices. Furthermore, the influx of high-moisture, late-harvested turmeric has resulted in quality-driven discounting within the physical market. Despite short-term pressures, the potential for downside is constrained by persistent supply tightness.

Arrivals in key producing states such as Maharashtra and Telangana remain below the seasonal average during this peak period, while quality concerns, including rhizome rot, have diminished the supply of premium export-grade turmeric. Farmers and stockists in pivotal regions such as Sangli and Nizamabad are strategically withholding stocks, expecting enhanced price realization, as premium “Salem Fali” varieties are currently trading close to Rs 20,000 per quintal. Fundamentally, carry-forward stocks are projected at approximately 15 lakh bags, a notable decrease from last season’s 20 lakh bags, suggesting a more constrained supply buffer.

Export demand exhibits stability, as shipments increased by 1% year-on-year during the period of April to February 2026, whereas imports experienced a significant decline of 40%, thereby bolstering domestic prices. Increased demand from Bangladesh, coupled with heightened interest in IPM-certified turmeric from the EU, is providing additional support. Meanwhile, apprehensions regarding a potentially subpar monsoon in 2026 and increasing storage losses are fostering a longer-term optimistic perspective.

From a technical perspective, the market is experiencing long liquidation, evidenced by a 1.43% decrease in open interest to 15,830 contracts, coinciding with a price decline of Rs 62. Immediate support is identified at Rs 15,828, with additional downside potential toward Rs 15,722. Resistance is positioned at Rs 16,044.
