Turmeric settled 0.56% higher at Rs 20,130, driven by concerns regarding a hand-to-mouth supply situation, lower-than-anticipated sowing expansion in crucial growing regions, and potential weather risks associated with El Nino affecting the newly sown crop. Insufficient rainfall in the initial growth stage has heightened worries regarding crop development and yield potential, while a decrease in carry-forward stocks over the last three to four years has diminished the overall supply buffer. Industry estimates indicate that carry-forward stocks are approximately 15 lakh bags, a decrease from over 20 lakh bags in the previous season, underscoring a structurally tighter availability.
However, the upside remained constrained as monsoon activity enhanced across Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, while improved reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh bolstered water availability during the vegetative stage and alleviated concerns regarding crop failures. Re-sowing in North Karnataka has been finalised subsequent to rainfall, with crop conditions exhibiting signs of enhancement. Selling pressure from farmers during the peak harvest window exerted downward pressure on prices. The regulations set forth by the European Union regarding Maximum Residue Limits have resulted in the rejection of lots that do not comply with Integrated Pest Management standards. This has consequently led to discounts on commercial-grade turmeric. Conversely, the increasing demand for turmeric certified under Integrated Pest Management has bolstered the market for compliant stocks.
Export demand exhibited resilience, as India’s turmeric exports surged 30% year-on-year to 17,987 tonnes in June 2026, up from 13,787 tonnes. Additionally, exports for the April-June period saw an 8% increase, totalling 51,987 tonnes. China’s cumulative imports experienced a remarkable increase of 2,710%, reaching 2,108 tonnes. Shipments from Oman rose significantly by 469%, totalling 2,342 tonnes. Additionally, notable growth was observed in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay. In Nizamabad, the spot price of turmeric experienced a decrease of 0.12%, settling at Rs 19,997.90.
Technically, turmeric is experiencing short covering as open interest decreased by 0.59% to 36,010 contracts, while prices increased by Rs 112, suggesting position unwinding accompanied by positive price momentum. Support is positioned at Rs 19,882, and a decline beneath this level may challenge Rs 19,632, whereas resistance is identified at Rs 20,336; a persistent advance beyond this threshold could propel prices toward Rs 20,540.
