Turmeric prices concluded at Rs 20,856, reflecting a 3.07% increase, influenced by constrained spot supplies and escalating apprehensions regarding the effects of irregular monsoon rains and a possible El Niño phenomenon on the recently planted crop. Market sentiment exhibited a bullish trend as diminished carry-forward stocks and insufficient rainfall during the initial crop development phase heightened concerns regarding potential production shortfalls. Spot prices exhibited an upward trend due to a hand-to-mouth supply situation, as buyers engaged in actively fulfilling their immediate requirements.
While timely pre-monsoon showers have facilitated initial sowing, traders exercise caution, as the distribution of rainfall in the upcoming weeks will be critical for crop development and yield prospects. Despite the robust rally, gains were somewhat limited by the enhancement of monsoon activity in key turmeric-producing areas over the past week, which has stimulated sowing and alleviated certain apprehensions regarding the forthcoming crop. Turmeric acreage is projected to rise by 16.05% year-on-year in 2026, significantly surpassing the five-year average of 1.88 lakh hectares, bolstered by favourable market prices.
However, overall supply remains structurally constrained as carry-forward stocks have diminished to approximately 15 lakh bags, in contrast to over 20 lakh bags in the previous season. Increased selling by farmers during the peak harvest period has supplied the market, while the demand for Integrated Pest Management certified turmeric from European buyers continues to bolster premium-quality stocks. India’s turmeric exports experienced a slight decline of 1% year-on-year, totalling 18,960 tonnes in May. Meanwhile, cumulative exports for the months of April and May remained relatively stable at 33,999 tonnes. Shipments to China, Oman, Yemen, and Italy exhibited robust growth, indicative of strong overseas demand.
Technically, the market experienced short covering, as open interest decreased by 0.32% to 29,230 contracts while prices surged significantly. Turmeric is currently maintaining immediate support at Rs 19,928. A breach below this level is expected to challenge the Rs 19,002 mark. On the upside, resistance is positioned at Rs 21,380, and a sustained move above this level could extend the rally toward Rs 21,906, maintaining a firmly positive near-term technical outlook.
