Turmeric prices increased by 0.50%, closing at Rs 26,896, driven by apprehensions regarding unpredictable weather patterns in key production areas and diminished market arrivals. Total arrivals were estimated at approximately 6,000 bags, a decrease of nearly 2,000 bags from the prior trading session, thereby reinforcing bullish sentiment. Persistently dry weather in certain areas of Maharashtra has raised apprehensions regarding crop development and yield potential. Meanwhile, forecasts of cyclonic rainfall across South Indian producing regions have introduced uncertainty into the crop outlook.
Nevertheless, the resurgence of monsoon activity in Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, coupled with enhanced reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, alleviated short-term worries regarding crop failures. Re-sowing in North Karnataka has been finalised subsequent to the rainfall, enhancing the outlook for crop yields. Supply fundamentals remain supportive, with industry estimates indicating carry-forward stocks of around 15 lakh bags compared with over 20 lakh bags last season. However, the sale of crops by farmers during the peak harvesting period, coupled with improved weather conditions, may constrain any additional gains. Export demand exhibited variability, with India’s turmeric exports experiencing a 14% year-on-year decrease, totalling 14,736 tonnes in August 2026, down from 17,136 tonnes in the same month the previous year. However, cumulative exports during April-August rose by 4% to reach 65,476 tonnes.
Shipments to the UAE, Netherlands and Brazil recorded strong growth, while exports to Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia declined sharply. Demand for Integrated Pest Management certified turmeric from European buyers is providing additional support. However, stricter European Union residue regulations have led to rejections of non-compliant stocks, thereby exerting pressure on commercial-grade prices. Meanwhile, the Nizamabad spot market concluded at Rs 25,170.15, reflecting a decline of 0.34%. Overall, diminished carry-forward stocks and weather-related uncertainties continue to provide support, whereas enhanced rainfall, farmer selling activities, and varied export demand may limit potential gains.
Technically, the market is witnessing short covering, as open interest declined by 1.50% to 18,040 contracts while prices increased by Rs 134, indicating the closure of existing short positions. Turmeric is presently encountering support at Rs 26,670, beneath which prices may challenge Rs 26,450. On the upside, resistance is positioned at Rs 27,190, and a sustained move above this level could propel prices toward Rs 27,490.
