NCDEX Updates

Turmeric prices concluded the trading session with a decline of 0.25%, settling at Rs 20,218, as profit booking took place following recent gains. This downturn is attributed to tight hand-to-mouth supplies, apprehensions regarding the potential impact of El Nino on the newly sown crop, and a lower-than-anticipated expansion in sowing across critical growing regions, which has heightened concerns about reduced production in the forthcoming harvest. Prices have increased due to insufficient rainfall and worries that ongoing dry conditions during the early stages of crop development may negatively impact yields. Meanwhile, carryforward stocks have been steadily decreasing over the past three to four years.

Industry estimates suggest that carryforward stocks are approximately 15 lakh bags, a decrease from over 20 lakh bags in the previous season, which maintains a tight overall availability buffer. However, the potential for upside remained constrained as monsoon activity experienced a resurgence across Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, alleviating concerns related to dry weather. Additionally, enhanced reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh contributed to improved water availability during the vegetative phase. Re-sowing in North Karnataka has been completed subsequent to rainfall, enhancing crop conditions and alleviating concerns regarding crop failure. The regulations concerning Maximum Residue Limits in the European Union have led to the rejection of lots that do not comply with Integrated Pest Management standards, thereby discounting commercial-grade turmeric.

Meanwhile, the increasing demand for turmeric certified under Integrated Pest Management continues to bolster the market for compliant stocks. Selling pressure from farmers intensified during the peak harvest period. India’s turmeric exports experienced a 10% decline year-on-year, totalling 13,489 tonnes in July 2026, down from 15,071 tonnes. However, cumulative exports from April to July increased by 4%, reaching 65,476 tonnes compared to 63,020 tonnes in the previous year. Exports to Turkey experienced a remarkable increase of 431%, reaching 3,007 tonnes. Similarly, Sri Lanka saw a significant rise of 644%, totalling 156 tonnes, while Nigeria recorded an impressive growth of 983%, amounting to 69 tonnes.

Switzerland and Zambia exhibited robust economic expansion. In Nizamabad, spot prices concluded at Rs 20,132.55, reflecting an increase of 0.86%. Technically, the market is experiencing new selling pressure, with open interest rising by 0.25% to 36,250, while prices have decreased by Rs 50. Turmeric is currently experiencing support at Rs 19,990; a decline below this level could lead to a test of Rs 19,760. Conversely, resistance is identified at Rs 20,370, and a breakthrough above this threshold may pave the way for a rise to Rs 20,520.
