Turmeric prices concluded at Rs 21,120, reflecting a 2.73% increase, driven by a hand-to-mouth supply scenario, apprehensions regarding insufficient rainfall, and worries about the potential impact of El Nino on the currently sown crop. Additionally, the lower-than-anticipated growth in acreage in crucial cultivation areas has heightened concerns regarding future production levels. Prolonged dry conditions in the early stages of crop development may negatively impact yields, while a notable reduction in carry-forward stocks over the last three to four years has led to a tightening of overall availability. However, the potential for upside remained constrained as monsoon activity resumed across Maharashtra, Telangana, and North Karnataka, alleviating worries regarding moisture availability.
Enhanced reservoir levels in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are contributing positively to water availability during the vegetative phase. Meanwhile, re-sowing in North Karnataka has been finalised due to favourable rainfall and improved crop conditions. European Union regulations concerning Maximum Residue Limits have led to the rejection of lots that do not comply with Integrated Pest Management standards, resulting in discounts for commercial-grade turmeric. In contrast, the demand for IPM-certified turmeric has remained robust, thereby supporting compliant stocks. Industry estimates suggest that carry-forward stocks are approximately 15 lakh bags, a decrease from over 20 lakh bags in the previous season.
The actions of farmers selling during the peak harvest window exerted additional pressure, as traders kept a close watch on whether the recent improvements in rainfall would lead to sustained production levels. India’s turmeric exports experienced a year-on-year increase of 30%, reaching 17,987 tonnes in June 2026, up from 13,787 tonnes. Additionally, exports for the April-June period rose by 8%, totalling 51,987 tonnes compared to 47,950 tonnes in the previous year. China’s imports totalled 2,108 tonnes cumulatively, reflecting a remarkable increase of 2,710%, whereas shipments from Oman surged by 469% to reach 2,342 tonnes. Robust export growth was similarly observed in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay.
In Nizamabad, spot turmeric prices concluded at Rs 20,413.35, reflecting an increase of 0.98%. From a technical perspective, turmeric is experiencing fresh buying activity, as evidenced by a 0.39% increase in open interest to 36,080, alongside a price rise of Rs 562, suggesting the establishment of new long positions. Turmeric is presently encountering support around Rs 20,510, and a persistent breach beneath this threshold may result in a challenge at Rs 19,900. On the upside, resistance is positioned around Rs 21,540, and a decisive movement above this threshold could bolster prices toward Rs 21,960.
