Turmeric prices experienced an upward movement yesterday, concluding with an increase of 0.94% at Rs 17,948. This rise was bolstered by arrivals that continued to fall short of normal levels, alongside persistent demand both domestically and internationally. The diminished inventories held by both farmers and stockists have established a robust foundation for prices in anticipation of new crop arrivals. Supply-side concerns remain prominent as yields in major producing states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka have been negatively impacted by excessive rainfall. Unseasonal rainfall during August–September resulted in waterlogging and disease challenges, affecting approximately 15% of the crop area in certain regions of Marathwada, leading to estimated yield losses of 15–20% in the impacted areas.

Nonetheless, the potential for growth is constrained by increased acreage. For the 2025–26 season, turmeric acreage is projected to reach 3.02 lakh hectares, reflecting an increase of approximately 4% compared to the previous year, with fresh production anticipated at 11.41 lakh tonnes. The estimated output of dried turmeric across India stands at 90 lakh bags, an increase from 82.5 lakh bags in the previous season.

However, the net rise in availability is constrained by lower carry-forward stocks. Maharashtra’s dried output is projected to increase to 54 lakh bags, whereas other states collectively may yield approximately 40 lakh bags. Export prospects continue to show resilience, as exports from April to October 2025 are projected to increase by 2.05% year-on-year, notwithstanding a month-on-month decline observed in October. Reduced imports have consequently constrained domestic supply.

From a technical perspective, the market is experiencing short covering, evidenced by a 0.44% decline in open interest alongside a price increase of Rs 168. Support is identified at Rs 17,708, beneath which prices may approach Rs 17,466, whereas resistance is established at Rs 18,146, with a breakout potentially driving prices toward Rs 18,342.
