Turmeric prices concluded the trading session down by 1.04% at Rs 16,162, influenced by anticipations of increased acreage due to favorable rainfall during the current sowing season. Preliminary estimates indicate that turmeric acreage may increase by 15–20% as farmers transition from less lucrative crops. The area dedicated to turmeric for the 2024–25 season is already reported at 3.30 lakh hectares, reflecting an approximate 10% rise compared to the previous year. Nonetheless, the drawbacks were constrained owing to restricted physical supply and robust demand dynamics.
Arrivals persistently remain below the typical levels, with reports indicating that both farmers and stockists have markedly diminished their inventories, establishing a robust foundation in anticipation of the new crop. The agricultural landscape in pivotal states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and segments of Tamil Nadu has been negatively impacted by excessive rainfall, leading to waterlogging and the emergence of disease challenges. Market estimates suggest that crop damage in major growing regions may range from 15% to 20%, potentially affecting both yield quality and overall output. Delays in arrivals are anticipated until February–March, with IPM and EU/US-compliant material expected to be accessible only after May 2026.
Carry-forward stocks persist at historically low levels, which continues to underpin prices. Export demand continues to exhibit strength, especially from Europe and the United States. During the period from April to September 2025, turmeric exports experienced a year-on-year increase of 4.02%, despite a slight decline in shipments observed in September on a month-to-month basis.
From a technical perspective, the market is experiencing renewed selling pressure, evidenced by a 2.69% increase in open interest to 12,045, coinciding with a decline in prices of Rs 170. Turmeric exhibits a support level at Rs 15,878, and a breach beneath this threshold would initiate a test of Rs 15,594. Resistance is identified at Rs 16,518, and a breakthrough could propel prices towards Rs 16,874.
